AlexanderI signed up for a day retreat at the Fire Lotus Zen Temple in Brooklyn called “The Shape of Awake”. Hope Martin, an accomplished Alexander Technique teacher and Tibetan Buddhist practitioner was leading the day, offering the technique in application towards the seated meditation posture. F.M. Alexander (1869-1955) was an Australian actor who experienced chronic laryngitis in his performance career.

It was highly frustrating for him, and his doctors had no remedy, so Alexander decided to solve the mystery on his own. With the help of three-way mirrors, he discovered excess tension in his neck and body, and believed this to be the cause of his ailment. He developed new ways of speaking and moving with ease, freeing up the neck and spine. His health improved to such an extent that many persuaded him to teach what he had learned.
